This blog has nothing to do with writing.
I just wanted to mention a few things about the state of Television these days. First of all, I am a movie guy, first and foremost... Never really cared much for TV. Aside from sports watching, I may as well not even have a TV package - that's the amout of TV I watch.

Well,
I had intended to write a few blog posts a couple of days ago, but my cat had kittens, so the night was essentially a write-off (my cleverness astounds even myself sometimes). Anyway, it took me a few days to get back to it, so I find myself behind a few entries as I attempt to reach my goal of an average of one entry per day. I plan on relocating my computer back downstairs, as the cat/kittens seem to have made my office their new home.

Ok, well, I went the last two days without a post, but I have two planed for today to make up for it.
First, I want to discuss what I believe is 'fair' in storytelling, in regards to structure and the information revealed to the audience. This is going to relate to no writing in general, with no particular media, however I'm going to use a film to get my points across. Also, in fairness to you, I'm going to discuss the film "A Perfect Getway", which I watched the other day, so if you haven't seen it (and perhaps plan to), you should maybe skip this post for the time being as I'll be giving away the entire film. So, you have been warned.

I'm going to write about something a bit different today. Instead of discussing my personal thoughts on a subject, I want to explain how this blog all came about. This'll be a relatively short post, but one that is important for me to write.
Nearly 10 years ago (god, that feels like a long time) a friend and I collaborated on a script. The script was short, maybe thirty pages - yet we planned it as a 90 minute film. If you're not familiar with screenwriting, a single script page should roughly translate to a minute of film, so a ninety 90 movie would require a script that is probably somewhere around the 90 page mark. Our script didn't require 90 pages of material however, as it was conceived as a sort of 'artificial' documentary. Scott (the aforementioned friend) and myself would essentially be acting as ourselves (did I mention we planned to film this movie as well) through a script that was based on some of our personal experiences, albeit somewhat exaggerated. We'd scripted ourselves as amateur filmmakers (which we were), and we planned on setting up interviews with regular people, as well as having some actors perform some scripted dialogue, in order to form an opinion as to whether or not "true love" was something that could actually exist. Now, if you know Scott or myself, you would know this film would not be a positive experience. We, in fact, scripted a brutally negative ending that could have played like a sort of psychological assault - if we had the capability to pull it off.

The definition of art is "the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance." That's dictionary.com's definition not mine. Moreso, art is "any field using the skills or techniques of art". Again... dictionary.com.
I prefer a more broad definition. I consider art to be "anything that can be physically created through the merger of intelligence and imagination". Somebody call the dictionary people... Feel free to put that quote anywhere you like.

Two blog posts in two days... So far so good.
Seriously though, for my first official blog, I think I want to discuss imagination. Writers are nothing without imagination, and I mean that in the most generalized blanket statement you could possibly imagine. From the most gifted novelists and screenwriters to those that pen short stories to those who write solely within the basis of reality - imagination is everything to a writer. Novels and biographical pieces alike are the amalgamation of reality and imagination. How does a documentary subject, that is grounded solely in reality, have anything to do with imagination, one might ask. Let me explain...

It's August 1st... but I guess you were probably already aware of that.
I chose August 1st for my first ever blog post for a number of reasons. Number one... It's easy to remember. When I look back, on August 27th, and see that I've only posted three blog entries, I won't have to fumble for dates, wondering, to myself, "When the hell did I start this thing?". That question would no doubt be followed by feelings of both inadequacy and failure.

I just wanted to write a quick post (I actually mean a quick post, this time... I know I deceived you last time) this evening before I continue what I started last night.
I managed to write about 1500 words last night, not as much as I'd hoped, but I was struggling to write the first chapter of what is, for the time being anyway, a horror novel. I managed to finish the very short chapter, although I can see that it need some serious work. I read back through it when I had finished, and I was somewhat happy with what I wrote, but honestly don't know if I need the chapter that I wrote last night.
