I love perusing the previously viewed sections of my local video stores, in search of anything which may be of interest to a horror fan like me. This includes foreign films, and direct to video flicks which may have slipped past me on their initial release. DTV horror films are now being released on such a large scale that it is impossible to know which are good, and which should be avoided. “Haunted Highway” certainly belongs to the latter group.
The amount of creativity that went into the writing of “ Haunted Highway ” is essentially nil. The film concerns a man who, after accidentally causing the death of his wife, drives to the lake where they were married, to drop the body. Along the way, he experiences a number of creepy occurrences, which lead us to believe he may be losing his mind. There is no linear plot to speak of. The man, played by Rand Gamble, a complete unknown, essentially drives from one place to another, and for 80 minutes, nothing happens. At least nothing of any consequence. It's incredibly poorly written, and not a single event, has any bearing on anything that follows. How movies like this get made, is completely beyond me. The fact that it took three people to write this shit, is completely mind-blowing.
There are a few effective sequences however, all of which occur near the beginning of the film. These sequences are obviously influenced by recent Asian cinema, as the manner in which they are edited, using abnormal speeds, make these bizarre events even more unsettling. Those moments are sparse however, and the rest of the film relies on… well, I can't really figure out what the rest of the film relies on, because it is wholly ineffective. There is no reason anyone should subject themselves to sitting through this entire film. Which brings me to…
The Reason I sat through the entire movie? All I can say is “thank god for sarcasm”. Sarcastic remarks have saved many a terrible movie amongst friends. In order to decrease the ‘suck', and create some reason to restrain myself from hitting the eject button on my DVD player, I found myself uttering completely ridiculous dialogue in place of the characters, and such things. One thing I find amusing, and should give you an idea of the quality of the script, is that while I was going out of my way to speak dialogue that really was ridiculous or perhaps had no resemblance to the events occurring onscreen, or even just stating the obvious, many times throughout “Haunted Highway”, I spoke the exact dialogue that was spoken in the movie. That's a scary thought.
Sorry, but I simply, in no way, can recommend “ Haunted Highway ”.
