During the screening of Live Evil at the FFF, after Ken Foree introduced the picture, I noticed a kind of energy in the audience - a positive vibe. I was laughing probably harder than anyone, but I thought everyone was more or less on the same page as I was. It was a fun event. But afterward during some discussions, I heard almost exclusive complaints about the picture; one person even going so far as to say it was the worst movie that they had ever seen.

Was I missing something? I saw people laughing and having a good time. I saw the actors on screen having a good time. The producer of the picture got up to the front of the audience after the applause, and brought with him his 70+ year old stunt man to talk about what a good time they had making the film. What more did these dissatisfied and inexplicably angry audience members want?

Live Evil, like Modern Vampires and House of the Dead seems to exist in this strange place that I don't understand, where people are unwilling to accept camp. They are more than willing to do so with other films (Evil Dead, The Beyond, Dead Alive, Demons, Re-Animator, etc.), so why is it that these other pictures get shat on so hard by these very same people? The rampant Uwe Boll hatred is on another realm of existence to me. It's baffling.

Live Evil is one hell of a great time. I fucking loved it. I want to be perfectly clear about that. It made me giggle from start to finish. Its violence is unrelentingly over-the-top silly, its dialogue is sharply stupid and its actors never take themselves too seriously while delivering it. There is even some fun puppetry. Hell, the picture starts off with a well-directed and exciting car chase through the desert. When everything was said and done, I felt as though I got my money's worth. I'd sound like a spoiled brat to ask for anything more.

I don't care that the director made a few mistakes along the way. There is the occasional scene that doesn't hit the way it intends – so what? Live Evil isn't meant to scare you, and it sure as hell isn't meant to challenge you. It wants to entertain and it succeeds. I'll take a movie like this any day of the week, over crap with similar intentions like Semi-Pro and Fun With Dick and Jane.

My hope is that Live Evil, which I believe has yet to find a distributor and therefore is unseen by much of the world, will catch on with other audiences, gain momentum and take its rightful place alongside other Midnight Film favorites.
