Who, between the ages of 20-27, didn't have a crush on Drew Barrymore growing up? I certainly did, as I'm certain many of you did as well. But, even putting that aside for a minute, My Date with Drew is certainly relatable to nearly anyone. The thought of putting everything aside in order to pursue a lifelong dream, is something we all wish we could do. However, it seems more often than not that we let the thought of failure or the intimidation of giving up our routines, or way of life, hold us back. It's sad, but true, and every single one of us is guilty of it.
Brian Herzlinger makes the decision to follow his dream. Fresh off of winning $1100 dollars on the game show “Taboo”, he decides to attempt the impossible, and win a date with his 17-year crush, Drew Barrymore. With two of his friends in tow, they purchase a Mini DV camcorder which must be returned to Circuit City within 30-days, for a money-back refund, and attempt to document the entire process, from beginning to end, or the 30-day mark, whichever comes first.
It is incredibly easy to sympathize with Brian's quest, given that we immediately respect his efforts, and he's incredibly charismatic and likable. We're rooting for him from the beginning, as he's not disturbed, creepy, or a stalker. He's an average guy, who wants to meet Drew Barrymore. He wants to achieve something that's out of his reach. It's entirely respectable, and it makes it incredibly easy to get lost in the picture and just follow along, enjoying the film for what it is.
I won't spoil anything for you, as you'd be surprised at some of the things that happen during the film. Brian gets some direct help from celebrities, makes connections to people close to Drew, etc. It's amazing how far you can get, just based on who you know. When the leads turn sour however, we sympathize, and hope things right themselves, as we, as the audience, want nothing more than to see Brian accomplish his goal.
I challenge anyone to not enjoy this film. It's relevant enough that we should all take something from it. It's far from perfect, but it is certainly enjoyable, and in my opinion, significant. We see ourselves, or who we wish we were, in Brian. It'll make you feel good, about life, and about who we are, and what we're capable of. With routine comes boredom, and sometimes, you have to risk the stability of your daily life, to find out if there's more out there. Let life grab you by the balls, and see where it takes you. We could all benefit from being a little less conservative.
