I love reviewing films like Sleepover Nightmare. It really is a terribly film, yet I find some bizarre attraction to films of this kind. I don't rent a lot of movies, so I end up wasting a lot more money than I probably should on garbage like Sleepover Nightmare. But in the long run, I'm never disappointed by my choices, no matter how terrible they are. I guess it's kind of nice knowing that I could make a better film than some of the films that are currently being produced.

That's not to say Sleepover Nightmare is all bad. Sure, the acting is quite weak, and it seems as though director Boon Collins has no natural ability as a director (or writer for that matter), but amidst all this, there is still a moderate level of entertainment that the film has no right to reach. It's as though the combination of ‘suck' creates something almost enjoyable. It's a bizarre phenomenon in the low budget horror industry.

I could summarize the plot, but I don't really feel there's any need. Sleepover Nightmare is a wholly derivative slasher film. So the plot is pretty much summed up as: ‘A group of teenagers gather for a house party, and soon find they're being offed by an escaped mental patient.' If you thought the story would deviate even slightly from this basic premise, you'd be wrong. It's not unlike any slasher film that's come before it.

While the premise is less than original, the film does score some points for (slight) innovation when it comes to the death scenes. There's a hilarious scene in which a beer can causes one teens death, and I don't think I can recall seeing someone attack the killer with a severed head before. It makes me laugh, and when a movie is this anti-scary, that's all you can hope for.

I certainly can't recommend Sleepover Nightmare to anyone but those looking for a laugh at the expense of a filmmaker who can best be described as amateurish. It's certainly amusing enough for those who know what to expect, and under the right circumstances, could be quite entertaining. Gather some friends, drink some beer, and enjoy. Otherwise, Sleepover Nightmare is best left alone.
