Ironically "Yellow Submarine", while not remembered like its live action predecessors, may just be the best film out of the three. I realize that may be a controversial statement to make, but I make it nonetheless, as while there may be only a couple of good era-defining movies, there is only one animated movie in the annum's that is as creative and distinct as "Yellow Submarine".
Fans of The Beatles, if they care to read this, may be upset that I argue the importance of this movie. I have had more than one fan tell me how much they hated it, and how disappointed they were in The Beatles for making it. It can definitely be said that "Yellow Submarine" is not for everybody. It is long for an animated picture, its sense of humor is dry (and a lot of it is lost in the muddled dialogue of its characters), and its style can be aesthetically displeasing to those who find it to be such. If you aren't a fan of The Beatles, you may not like this picture either, because it is packed full of (the more modern sounding of) their work. I'm not even sure all children will enjoy "Yellow Submarine", because the style may be too unnerving for many of them.
I am a fan of animation, and not of The Beatles, and it is this reason that I appreciate "Yellow Submarine". It is among the most unique, creative, and ambitious films ever made, despite its origins. The music is hypnotic, the style is almost overbearing in its depth, and the art is bright, colorful, and fun to watch. I can't imagine how a team of people created this, because so much of the art is so involved that to explain it to another person in words would be impossible. To even conjure some of the ideas in one's head doesn't seem feasible to me. A mind can only contain so much imagination, and "Yellow Submarine" surpasses that amount tenfold.
It is also the kind of film that people may use as a kind of societal philosophy. Existentialism has a way of being infinitely metaphorical to people that wish it to be, and "Yellow Submarine" is existential in spades. Myself, I just like getting lost in it.
