"The Green Lantern"
While I won't compare “The Green Lantern” to any of the recent comic book adaptations that have impressed me beyond measure (“Spider-Man 2”, “The Dark Knight” and “Iron Man”), “The Green Lantern” certainly entertained me more than I expected it to, especially within the realm of DC Comics adaptations. I liked it more than just a little bit, and I expect some negative feedback on this review, based on the general consensus that the film is what many would consider 'a dog'.
"X-Men Origins: Wolverine"
So this is it! My first ever movie review for my brand new Movie Blog *holds for applause*. So I thought what better way to start off my blog than with the kick off to this year's testosterone filled summer, "X-men Origins: Wolverine". Well it turned out to be not much of a kick off for me unfortunately.
"Watchmen"
I will begin by clarifying (as everyone else does) whether I am a reader and a fan of the original “Watchmen” graphic novel. I am. I cannot speak for the value of Snyder's picture from the perspective of someone ignorant to its source material.
It surprises and dismays me that there are others who are familiar with Alan Moore's original and still approve wholly of Zack Snyder's film.
I can't see why.
"Superman Returns"
I have to admit that I am a DC guy. I never cared nearly as much about the 'X-men' or 'The Fantastic Four', as I did about 'Batman' and 'Superman'. I found the Marvel characters as well as the lore to be second-rate when comparing them to DC. One of the reasons for this identification, I would have to believe, is the original cinema of 'Superman' that entertained me (and I suppose continues to) with its fantasy and innocent charm.
"Spider-Man 3"
If the original "Spider-Man" was a 4-star film, and the sequel, a 5-star film, "Spider-Man 3" is at best a 3-star film. This is unfortunate, as "Spider-Man 2" still holds strong in my mind as the best superhero movie made, to date. I was hoping that Sam Raimi could infuse the third film with the same energy as the second, as well as the same level of character depth and development. I was terribly disappointed in both regards.
"Punisher: War Zone"
Okay so it's mindless and campy, but I had a good time with it, damn it. The death toll was high, the tone was light and it was a comic book movie that was released when comic book movies were rare.
Made in a time when comic book movies yearly saturate the box office, and inferior to many of those films, I still got a kick out of it. This is in no way an accurate depiction of the Punisher character (Jane is a little too cute, and doesn't deal out near enough punishment), but the tone of the picture alternated between camp and depraved in a unique and unintentional way. I liked it.
"Iron Man"
I really wish they hadn't used Black Sabbath's 'Iron Man' during the closing credits of the film. It's not that I dislike the song, or that I even felt it didn't compliment the film. It just seemed so obvious. They didn't have to use the song, because really, it doesn't have much to do with the film (or comic) thematically. But we all knew it would be in there somewhere. I just would have been nice if they did the opposite of what everyone expected. The reason I mention this, is that this is really my only complaint about the entire film. And it's a small one at that…
"The Incredible Hulk"
Direct comparisons, I'm sure, will be made between this Louis Leterrier incarnation and Ang Lee's "Hulk" of 2003. Consensus to this point is that Lee's vision was an unpleasant mess (which it was). And for those that still cared about the potential franchise, Leterrier promised the Hulk movie that they wanted in the first place. After seeing "The Incredible Hulk", I'm not entirely sure they got what they wanted. Then again, I'm not sure they even knew what that was in the first place. Did they know that a film like "Spiderman 2" could exist?
"The Dark Knight"
This is relatively pointless. You've already enough about "The Dark Knight" and have seen it at least once. Why the hell would you bother reading this article when you already know what to expect. The movie is great. Worth the wait. Joker sure was scary. It's too bad Heath Ledger died. What am I going to say that's new?
